Free to Breathe Launches Free to Breathe Support Line, a Free Resource for Patients With Lung Cancer and Their Families

MADISON, WI -- Free to Breathe announced today the launch of the Free to Breathe Support Line. The new support line provides education, connections to resources and opportunities for meaningful engagement to help patients and caregivers better face the challenges of lung cancer.

“A diagnosis of cancer of any type is stressful, and people with lung cancer often face the added burden of stigma associated with their disease. Speaking to a “live” person can help reassure patients and caregivers that they are not alone in their fight against lung cancer. Unfortunately, many facing lung cancer lack the opportunity to talk to someone who understands,” said Program Director, Cheryl Petersen. “We are proud to be supporting patients with lung cancer and their caregivers with this new, free service.”

Patients, caregivers and survivors expressed a need for education focused on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, molecular testing, second opinions, cancer centers of excellence, clinical trials, palliative care and caregiver support.  Having access to educational resources can help ease the distress and anxiety that is so normal to feel at the time of diagnosis.

The Free to Breathe Support Line will also connect callers with important resources that help them face the challenges associated with lung cancer. Resources include support groups, organizations that provide assistance with financial issues, smoking cessation programs, legal services and assistance finding local services

“My personal experiences inspired me to get involved with advocacy when I learned firsthand the devastating impact of a cancer diagnosis,” said Petersen, a registered nurse and PhD. “My goal is to use what I have learned both personally and professionally to provide support to those who are touched by lung cancer.”

The Free to Breathe Support Line is a completely free resource for patients with lung cancer and their families. Callers may contact us as often as they need. The toll-free support line is 1.844.835.4325 and is staffed Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm CDT.
