Latest Initiative from the Lung Cancer Profiles Campaign Focuses on Raising Awareness of Molecular Testing in Lung Cancer

MADISON, Wis. – May 16, 2014 – Free to Breathe and five other leading lung cancer advocacy groups, along with Pfizer Oncology, today launched United We Test Quest, a national mapping project that calls on lung cancer survivors, their families, friends, advocates and health care professionals to amplify awareness around the importance of molecular testing. Molecular testing provides information regarding the genetic makeup of a tumor, which helps physicians and patients with their treatment decisions. United We Test Quest is part of the Lung Cancer Profiles initiative, a multi-faceted awareness campaign that has been supporting lung cancer patients since 2011.

United We Test Quest is the interactive online community of LungCancerProfiles.com where patients, their loved ones and health care professionals can make their pledge to support molecular testing in lung cancer. By placing a pin on the United We Test Quest map, they are making a commitment to share information about molecular testing within their community.

The United We Test Quest map will travel across the United States throughout 2014, including to the Free to Breathe Dallas/Fort Worth, TX Run/Walk on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with an estimated 224,210 new cases expected to be diagnosed this year alone. Lung cancer can affect anyone, including the young and non-smokers. Many types of lung cancer are driven by genetic mutations. Doctors can determine if there is a presence of molecular biomarkers or mutations driving a lung cancer by testing a tumor biopsy. While patients may be tested at any point in their diagnosis and treatment, molecular testing may help determine the treatment options that exist for a patient’s type of tumor.

Lung Cancer Profiles further supports a key goal of Free to Breathe to increase awareness around the importance of molecular testing education in order to help patients understand their lung cancer biomarkers. In addition to the interactive United We Test Quest map, Lung Cancer Profiles provides other important resources such as a personalized doctor discussion guide and a video illustrating how molecular testing works.

Join the United We Test Quest at LungCancerProfiles.com. Help us spread the word on the importance of molecular testing in lung cancer by sharing your pledge on Facebook and Twitter, and visit freetobreathe.org for more information.
