Tools for Change

New York City Metro Area  •  Sept. 17-20, 2015

The 8th Annual Lung Cancer Action Summit took place in the New York City metro area from 9/17-9/20. The weekend featured three days of interactive training sessions led by grassroots advocacy experts, plus one day just for survivors! At this year’s Summit, attendees learned how to work with Free to Breathe to:

  • Educate your community about the disease and opportunities to get involved
  • Inspire change through your own awareness message
  • Organize exciting and successful fundraising activities
  • Raise money to further the lung cancer cause
  • Develop an action plan to achieve your advocacy goals
  • And much more!

The Summit included an expert-guided lab tour at the Neuberger Berman Lung Cancer Research Center of Weill-Cornell Medical College where advocates met and talked to Free to Breathe research grant recipients. Advocates also heard key note speaker Sean Swarner share his powerful story of how he became the first cancer survivor to stand on top of Mt. Everest.

Survivors and Thrivers Gathering

New this year, anyone who has received a diagnosis of lung cancer was invited to attend an added day featuring workshops and activities specific to survivors!

The Survivors and Thrivers Gathering began with an optional Sunrise Yoga and breakfast. Bonus sessions included "Taking Care of Your Health During and After Treatment" and "Finding Emotional Balance During Your Lung Cancer Journey". You can get a glimpse of the entire day of activities by viewing the agenda.

Key Note Speaker: Sean Swarner

Sean Swarner was the Key Note Speaker for the 2015 Lung Cancer Action Summit. With only one functioning lung, a prognosis of fourteen days to live, and being in a medically-induced coma for a year, Sean Swarner is the first cancer survivor to stand on top of the world…Mt. Everest. Sean has broken through defined human limitation in order to redefine the way the world views success.
