Free to Breathe Hero: Chris Nolan

Christine Nolan is a matching gifts rock star. Since 2008, she has raised over $33,000 for Free to Breathe – and more $4,500 of that total was through some 50 matching gifts! As Chris prepares for the 2017 Philadelphia Free to Breathe Run/Walk, she’s sharing some of her tips for finding those extra funds.

FTB: How did you become involved with Free to Breathe?

Chris: When our dad, Frank Buck, passed away from lung cancer in 2008, we were struggling with our grief and wanted to give back and become part of something bigger than us. My sister searched the internet for a local lung cancer walk and stumbled upon your event. We are now proudly heading into our 10th year with Free to Breathe.

FTB: How did you find out about matching gifts?

Chris: My former firm, Merrill Lynch, had a matching gifts program. Once I found that out, I quickly acted on it and encouraged my co-workers to take advantage of the program as well. Two other friends are now getting matches from their firms. I’m now researching the gifting program at my current employer, Morgan Stanley.

FTB: What would you tell others who are thinking about approaching their employers about a matching gift?

Chris: It’s a no brainer! Why wouldn’t you want to turn your personal donation into something more, right? Most companies make it easy for employees to have their donation matched. It’s a feel-good process for everyone.

FTB: What other tips do you have for fundraising success?

Chris: Start early! Every year, I plan to start earlier and earlier. The more time you have, the more money you will raise. And use social media. It’s so easy now to blast friends about our story and event. Sometimes I feel guilty asking people year in and year out, but honestly, people want to help. They want to be part of something that means a lot to me, my family, and the greater good and are glad to put their funds toward stopping such a nasty disease.

Chris’s impact is far-reaching! By encouraging matching gifts, she is doubling her support – and the ripple effect is getting us that much closer to making lung cancer survival the expectation, not the exception. Find out if your company has a matching gift program at

So happy to see Chris continuing to support FTB! When I joined a Philadelphia credit union, her mom who worked there had just requested that the company’s annual employee giving campaign benefit FTB! Amazing post-LC to join a company already behind the cause! Thanks to Chris and Rita!!
