    Main Street Mile

All her cousins got tattoos to honor her aunt, who at the time was battling lung cancer, but Haley Convertino wanted to do something different.

Haley loves to run, and as the head track coach at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, MA, she saw running as an opportunity to increase awareness of lung cancer while raising critical funds for research. So she organized the Main Street Mile and Indoor Track Clinic.

The event, held in the wintry New England air last January, attracted 140 participants and raised over $1,000 for the National Lung Cancer Partnership!
This event was enjoyable for all ages! At the Indoor Track Clinic, members of Haley’s track team taught children 12 and under the basics of different track events.

Meanwhile, their parents, older siblings and some ambitious youngsters ran the Main Street Mile, a one-mile road race through downtown Wilbraham, MA. After finishing the race, participants enjoyed hot cocoa and goodies baked by track team members.

What was the most rewarding part? While raising money was great, Haley explained she was most inspired by the people who approached her after the race, thanked her for this opportunity and shared their stories about how lung cancer has affected their lives.

Haley’s event was so successful because she found a way to use her passion and skills to engage a community of people to help her. She is a great example of how anyone can be a successful fundraising event organizer, no matter the type or scope of the event.

Haley knows that other key components of her success were setting aside plenty of time to find sponsors and thinking strategically about delegating tasks to volunteers.
If you’re interested in organizing a fundraising event, think about ways you can use your interests and skills to create an event that fits your style, just like Haley did. As Haley recommends, “Go out and just do it!”
