Free To Breathe partnered with the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation on a unique crowdsourcing challenge, the Clinical Trial Innovation Prize.  In the Ideation Phase, we awarded $30,000 in prizes to three innovators for their unique ideas to improve patient enrollment. The second phase of the competition, the Implementation Phase, launched in 2016.

Clinical Trials InfographicWhy Clinical Trials are Important to Cancer Care

Clinical trials are a critical step in the process for getting new treatment options approved for care. Challenges in enrolling patients in clinical trials are numerous and multi-faceted. Unfortunately, these barriers mean treatment options don't make it to patients in a timely matter, if at all. Some barriers that have been acknowledged in previous research include lack of patient awareness and lack of resources at institutions, such as support staff and time.

Meanwhile, patients are waiting for treatment options. Many of them don't have the luxury of time to wait.

According to a report from a major National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) sponsored conference, "Poor enrollment onto trials threatens to slow progress in cancer care at a time when advances in science are enabling new opportunities for prevention and treatment."

This slow progress in clinical trials affects anyone with cancer as well as many other medical conditions that still await treatment options.
